MIXTAPE MADNESS: Heavyweight Division presents “Round 1″

Brooklyn, NY- Dave Gee and MC Diggadee have teamed up to form Heavy Weight Division and bring you “Round 1.” While they are known to perform together live, this is the first official mix from these partners in grime.  “Round 1″ is a high speed ride through a dark world of bass and powerful beats.  It consists of various unreleased tracks from some of the genres most prolific producers as well as the Cops remix by Dave Gee & Trigon ft. DZ.

The DJ/MC Dubstep duo have had a busy year between playing dozens of shows up and down the East Coast including Winter Music Conference and Starscape and making their way out to Puerto Rico and Paris in the last several months but when they’re at home in Brooklyn, they hold down a residency at Brooklyn’s premier dubstep monthly, Dark Room.

With residencies at Dark Room and Dub Nation, original tunes in the works, and a rapidly growing show schedule, this is an act to keep an eye on heading into the new year.

Staten Island- NYC-based badboy DJ Udachi is back with a slammin’ new mix just in time to take those Spring time vibes into the heat of Summer and get you prepared for the onslaught that this guy brings when he throws down.

We had the good fortune to catch Udachi b2b with B.Rich down in Miami at WMC and from all of the sets we saw that week, this was the best of the bunch…They ab-so-lutely MURDERED the dancefloor and had people going insane.

The end of an era, NYC’s notorious nightclub Limelight now a foodie market

New York City- I have to admit I am sad to be writing about this, though something like this was inevitable for the club that throngs of NYC clubbers knew simply as The Limelight.

It was where I landed my first DJ residency, when I moved to NYC in 97 (playing hiphop in the Chapel @ L.O.U.D.’s weekly) and could be seen MCing with some of the world’s best DnB artists for any number of events between ’97 and when the club closed in 2003. With all of the cavernous rooms and hidden passages, there was plenty of illegal fun going on throughout the venue (not to mention a wide variety of sexual adventures for those wild enough to partake), but THAT is another story best kept for private times.

Goodbye old friend, you are missed!

Limelight Food Market

Hiroko Masuike for The New York Times

(From Wikipedia.com) :

“The Limelight in New York, was owned by Peter Gatien, designed by Ari Bahat & opened in November 1983. Located in the former Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion on Sixth Avenue in an area once known as the “Ladies’ Mile,” located in Manhattan‘s Chelsea district, and originally started as a disco music and rock music club. It earned the media’s attention in 1996 when club and party promoter Michael Alig was arrested and later convicted for the killing and dismemberment of Angel Melendez, a resident drug dealer at the club. The 2003 film Party Monster, starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green, was based on this event.”

(From the NYTimes Article):

“Though it’s the sweet tooth that will get the most attention at this shiny new marketplace in the once notorious neo-Gothic Limelight, there are savories, too, including Peak Season, a farmers’ market in what used to be a churchyard, with 8 to 10 stands from nearby growers.

An outlet for Petrossian caviar; olive oils at Carter & Cavero; and Jezalin’s, a fancy-food shop stocked with breads, charcuterie, cheeses and condiments, are all on the first floor, along with Whisk, a cookware shop based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Rounding out the edible wares on the ground floor are MarieBelle chocolates; Mari’s New York brownies; Butterfly Bakeshop; Cupcake Stop; It’Sugar, for candy; the Little Candy Cake Company; a bakery called WannaHavaCookie; Baci Gelato; Miss Tea, for teas and accessories; and Jala frozen yogurt. A MarieBelle tearoom is on the top floor. A branch of Grimaldi’s pizzeria will open in about a month, and there are still two more restaurant spaces to be leased.”

In case you can’t make it out to the event, you can get a taste via the promo video they threw together for this year’s bash:

Bronx-based Producer/DJ J.Rabbit signed to Household Management

Atlanta- Household Management, who lately have been snapping up America’s top talent left and right, recently announced that they’ve added Bronx-based DnB/Dubstep bad man J.Rabbit to their roster.

If you’re not up on J’s sounds, the kid’s got skills and is nice with the Stateside jump-up as well as some pretty heavy duty dubstep bangers. Needless to say he’s come a long way from being the local resident DJ for “Club Dollhouse” in Long Beach, California a few years ago!

After the club out West closed, J.Rabbit headed for New York City, The BX aka The Bronx to be exact, and opened up a free Drum n’ Bass weekly in Times Square, NY every Wednesday night dubbed “Bassalicious”, and founded Beats Anonymous Productions.

At Bassalicious, J.Rabbit shared the stage with popular DJs such as DJ Dara, DB, Terravita and other local favorites such as DJ Odi and Jen Mas. All along this time, J.Rabbit while playing parties and making a name for himself was learning to produce music with the aid of Terravita/Hot Pink Delorean’s, Mr. Matt. Then in 2009, his first remix was released “B.Rich feat. Reese – Make Me Dance (J.Rabbit Remix)” on Party Like Us Records.

Shortly after this, his first EP “I’m So Happy” was released on Reid Speed’s label “Play Me Records”, he also has releases with Hot Pink Delorean’s label “Delorean Music Company” and NYC jump up icon, Hokilla’s label “Digital Terror Records“.

To help celebrate the signing to Household, J.Rabbit hit everyone off with Household Management February 2010 Mix for your enjoyment.

Due to snow, NYC’s DJ Empress unable to make Respect LA (02.11)

UPDATE- 04:18pm 02.09.10: Due to the “Apocalyptic Snowstorm” that is mauling the East Coast right now, all of the flights from NYC to LA have been canceled, so unfortunately, Empress’ appearance is looking like it will be delayed until future notice. Stay tuned for updated line-up information for this week!

Los Angeles- One of my favorite ladies in the DnB world, Empress, is making a West Coast stop at LA’s weekly, Respect.

She’s been busy in the studio working with her new band in preparation for a new album & tour, but she’s going to be taking a break to come and drop some heavy business for the LA crew.

StatesideSessionsCoverI’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with her since the early days in both of our careers and since day one, Empress has continued to push her sounds every where she goes (from being the 1st American DnB DJ to play at Movement back in ’99 to her “Stateside Sessions” tour in 2003 )  &  rocks crowds from coast to coast.

Those of you in the LA area should definitely make sure to check this one out, Empress is notorious for having exclusive dubs & her production definitely is not to be slept on- she does the damn thing ;-)
