FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Concentric Beats- U.S. Drum-n-Bass Documentary (2002)

Los Angeles- Back in 2002, a young aspiring documentary film maker by the name of Valida Carroll, armed with a grant and a vision, set out to capture the essence of the emerging US DnB Scene. With hops in LA, SF, SD, and NYC, she takes viewers on a 60 minute ride across the country and grabs a great slice of American DnB history along the way.

I remember when Valida was in NYC filming and I always had wondered what happened to the footage. For me it was great to see so many of my friends and people that I consider family, so young and ambitious, telling the world why 170-180BPM beats make their worlds go round. Towards the end, there’s also a VERY interesting prophecy about the future of DnB and the re-entry of 140BPM in the scene- see if you can catch it…

Big shouts to everyone that has came, went, stayed in the scene- holding it down proper, I love you all! (and super big shouts to Dave (aka Eecue from JungleScene.com) for posting this up and sharing it with the world!!!)

Bronx-based Producer/DJ J.Rabbit signed to Household Management

Atlanta- Household Management, who lately have been snapping up America’s top talent left and right, recently announced that they’ve added Bronx-based DnB/Dubstep bad man J.Rabbit to their roster.

If you’re not up on J’s sounds, the kid’s got skills and is nice with the Stateside jump-up as well as some pretty heavy duty dubstep bangers. Needless to say he’s come a long way from being the local resident DJ for “Club Dollhouse” in Long Beach, California a few years ago!

After the club out West closed, J.Rabbit headed for New York City, The BX aka The Bronx to be exact, and opened up a free Drum n’ Bass weekly in Times Square, NY every Wednesday night dubbed “Bassalicious”, and founded Beats Anonymous Productions.

At Bassalicious, J.Rabbit shared the stage with popular DJs such as DJ Dara, DB, Terravita and other local favorites such as DJ Odi and Jen Mas. All along this time, J.Rabbit while playing parties and making a name for himself was learning to produce music with the aid of Terravita/Hot Pink Delorean’s, Mr. Matt. Then in 2009, his first remix was released “B.Rich feat. Reese – Make Me Dance (J.Rabbit Remix)” on Party Like Us Records.

Shortly after this, his first EP “I’m So Happy” was released on Reid Speed’s label “Play Me Records”, he also has releases with Hot Pink Delorean’s label “Delorean Music Company” and NYC jump up icon, Hokilla’s label “Digital Terror Records“.

To help celebrate the signing to Household, J.Rabbit hit everyone off with Household Management February 2010 Mix for your enjoyment.

Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010!

For many of us, the 00′s was the decade that many of us made the transition from adolescence to young adults with real life slapping us awake every chance it got. It was also a decade of emotional roller coasters, from the  lows of the election debacle between GWB and Al Gore & the tragedies of 9/11 plus 2 wars that followed (that we are still neck deep in!) to the highs last year in seeing our nation’s first black President getting elected to the almost unanimous cries of “YES WE CAN”!

Politics & world issues aside, music across the spectrum has seen its share of high & low points as well and dance music is no exception. File sharing changed the way we can access music and shook the business models of the music industry to the core. We saw major artists like Radiohead and Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails try their hand at “fair market value” releases, with mixed results (I personally would kill to get all of that demographic and web data to see where the trends & sweet spots lie..).
