CNET's Top 10 music-tech trends that will shape the next decade

CNET Contributor Matt Rosoff asked CNET readers the question:

“Will the original iPod become an object of fetishization in 2020, like vinyl records are today?”

I can’t say that this will be the case as consumer electronics are often long forgotten once the newer, hotter item hits the market & even the die-hard fans of older technologies are the first to admit it’s the novelty factor over everything else.

Plus at least for me, there’s not an emotional connection to the iPod like there is with that 1st piece of vinyl you ever touched, the smell of the inner sleeve of an LP or listening to uncompressed hi-fidelity audio, the way it was meant to be enjoyed- the way the Audio Engineer, Producer, Mastering Engineer & Artist signed off on it, not smashed all to hell so that it can fit on the device du jour. The iPod earbuds combined with the audio fidelity of an MP3 is craptastic at best even at 320 and has forced many artists to say “damn the dynamics, just make it LOUD”

All that being said, Matt’s list of music-tech trends I think is pretty spot-on and any artists that are planning on being around for another 10-20 years, really need to focus on what’s coming up and get ahead of the curve whenever & wherever possible.

Check out the list (after the jump)…

Compression January Flyer Back

Taking you back to 1994- Remember when it was all Jungle?

Wayyyyy back when, when things were still called Jungle, the BBC gathered up the top names in the London scene & got their take on the new sounds that were taking over the clubs at the time.

It’s crazy for me to look back this and remember when these records were dropping and the raw energy that the folks like Shy FX, Fabio, General Levy, Fabio, etc. were harnessing. Who knew it would blow up to be as big as it is today! (I did…lol!)

There’s 3 installments of the video, so sit back, relax & enjoy the knowledge getting dropped (after the jump)…

Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010!

For many of us, the 00′s was the decade that many of us made the transition from adolescence to young adults with real life slapping us awake every chance it got. It was also a decade of emotional roller coasters, from the  lows of the election debacle between GWB and Al Gore & the tragedies of 9/11 plus 2 wars that followed (that we are still neck deep in!) to the highs last year in seeing our nation’s first black President getting elected to the almost unanimous cries of “YES WE CAN”!

Politics & world issues aside, music across the spectrum has seen its share of high & low points as well and dance music is no exception. File sharing changed the way we can access music and shook the business models of the music industry to the core. We saw major artists like Radiohead and Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails try their hand at “fair market value” releases, with mixed results (I personally would kill to get all of that demographic and web data to see where the trends & sweet spots lie..).
